Scholarship Information:

The Gloria Sand Memorial Scholarship was established in 2015 by her daughter and son-in-law, Sheila & Earl McClenathan, to honor her memory.

While growing up in Bismarck, Gloria always rooted for the Bismarck Demons. Gloria graduated from Bismarck High School in 1948, but her support of the Maroon & White continued throughout her lifetime. Her Demon Pride was always evident, and she eagerly looked forward to the start of the basketball season every year. Gloria passed away in 2009.

Gloria was also proud of the public service of both her father and husband. Her father John A. Gray was Ransom County Auditor for 7 terms. He also served as ND State Treasurer for 4 years and ND State Tax Commissioner for 14 years. Her husband Paul M. Sand served the state of North Dakota for 35 years: 25 years in the Attorney General’s Office and 10 years as a North Dakota State Supreme Court Justice. Both served overseas in the World Wars, her father was in WWI and her husband in WWII.

The purpose of the Scholarship is to financially assist a student from Bismarck High School or any other Bismarck public high school in continuing their education. Preference will be given to Bismarck High School students (boys or girls) who played varsity basketball and have a parent/guardian who is/was a state employee. If needed, municipal, county, or federal employment (in this order) may be substituted for state employment. Selection will be based on financial need, a minimum grade point average of 2.5, and recommendation by a BPS teacher or counselor. An Advisory Committee consisting of a Counselor from each high school will make recommendations for issuing the Scholarship.

The Gloria Sand Memorial Scholarship is to be awarded annually beginning in 2015.
