Legacy High School Historical Society National History Day Fundraiser

Legacy High School Historical Society National History Day Fundraiser

The Historical Society of Legacy High School is a student-led co-curricular club seeking to grow civic awareness in our school and community. Our membership includes students from both Legacy and Century High School. Each week, members of the society interact with one another in reading, analyzing, and interpreting primary and secondary source documents. Students engage in conversations about active citizenship, history, and political science in order to develop a greater understanding of what effective American life can look like not only now but also in their future. Additionally, students conduct in-depth research and writing for National History Day, a competition in which students use historical evidence to create claims about important events, documents, and leaders.

Along with furthering our civic education and scholarship, we also seek opportunities to volunteer with civic activities in the community. One example of our involvement is the society’s participation in the ND Veterans Cemetery Wreath Laying Ceremony each December, along with Sweets and Treats for LHS in October. The Historical Society is more than just a civic education club. Our society is an environment where students can foster and extend the skills needed to thrive in a 21st century environment regardless of future career path.

In our society, we hope to pursue the wisdom of James Madison, the Father of the American Constitution, when he holds that “Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.” In our pursuit of knowledge, community involvement, and civic awareness, we plan to champion the principles of our outstanding nation and sew the fabric of our national creed to form a patriotic soul across our entire country.

Members of our society are competing in the National History Day competition. We have advanced from the regional and state competitions, and we are raising funds for travel and lodging to represent North Dakota at the national competition, held near Washington D.C. in June. With a goal of raising at least $20,000, we would appreciate any donation, and plan to widely publicize the generosity of individuals and businesses who so generously support our efforts.

Donations are 501(c)(3) tax deductible and donors will receive both a receipt and end of year contribution statement for their records.

Questions regarding donations and the society can be directed to Landen Schmeichel at (701)-323-4850, ext. 6347 or landen_schmeichel@bismarckschools.org
