Keith and Phyllis Kepler Music Scholarship developed for BHS Band students to honor family’s music legacy

The Keith and Phyllis Kepler Music Scholarship was developed in 2024 by Keith Kepler to honor his family’s strong connections to music education with Bismarck. This scholarship was endowed to support BHS music students with preference given to those who made a significant contribution to the band and/or choir program within BHS during their time in the program. Keith’s family lineage had strong ties to music for as far back as he could remember. Holidays with extended family consisted of the entire family playing instruments together. Everyone within his family knew how to play the piano, and in addition to piano Keith loved to play the trumpet, euphonium, and the valve trombone. His dad, Harold Keppler, was a band instructor for CHS upon their opening in 1976, where he held that title until his retirement in 1986. Keith’s mom, Adelene Keppler, was an educator at Saxvik Elementary, primarily as a 4th grade teacher.

Keith graduated from BHS in 1969 and then went on to BSC (formerly BJC), Minot State University and University of Mary (formerly Mary College) where he received his degrees in Music Education and Social Behavioral Sciences (with an emphasis in history). Phyllis was a 1974 graduate of BHS and was also involved in the fine arts, as she was involved in various pursuits such as modeling and dance. Keith and Phyllis were married in 1984 and both actively volunteered within the Bismarck Community. They spent many years volunteering at the Heritage Center as well as the ND Parks and Rec.
